Time Management Tips – Set Effective Boundaries Without Backlash Using 3 Top Strategies

Article by Paula Eder

Time management tips vary in effectiveness, depending on your skill in using them. This is particularly true when setting boundaries. All too often, the line blurs between assertive and aggressive boundaries, leading to painful backlashes. Here’s how to keep on the right side!

What is your personal experience with setting boundaries so far? Take a quick quiz to see where you stand:

Will Your Boundaries Be Respected?

T/F __ I resist setting boundaries because I fear backlashes.

T/F __ I don’t get mad easily, but when I do, watch out!

T/F __ I count on anger to put teeth in my boundaries.

T/F __ Somehow, my boundaries never seem to stick.

T/F __ I could maintain my boundaries easier if I didn’t feel guilty.

Did you answer true to any of these? They serve as valuable signals for common pitfalls that lead to circular efforts and frayed nerves.

1. Do not set boundaries out of anger.

If you are not ready to set a boundary calmly, you are not ready to set it at all. Avoid the temptation to work off of righteous indignation. No matter how you may rationalize an angry ultimatum, others will rightly feel blamed, and resent it. You may well encounter punishing behavior, feel inwardly guilty, and revert back to the same unsatisfying routines.

Instead, work through any current crisis as calmly as possible. Let others know you will be thinking about ways to avoid similar situations in the future, and start creating a game plan.

2. Accept full responsibility for your end.

You will find it easiest to set boundaries if you take full responsibility for any role you play in becoming overextended. Make it clear that you will be changing your time choices accordingly, and request others’ cooperation.

3. When tested, keep your cool.

Yes, you may encounter some grumbling or lack of follow-through in others. But by remaining reasonable yourself, you have not provided others with a rationale for acting out. It will be easier for you to stick to your guns, and allow them wrestle with their own resistance.

In other words, by acting fairly, you create your own comfort zone. The less reactive you are to others, the more quickly their testing behavior will subside.

If you find you slip back into old patterns, don’t become harsh with yourself. Simply pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back on track. With practice, setting boundaries calmly and effectively will become the new normal. Assimilating these lessons will help you distinguish between assertiveness and aggressiveness on a gut level. Then, you can identify overkill in others’ bluster, and refuse to be coerced into giving away your valuable time.

Now, what is your next move in using smart boundaries to safeguard your time?

Time Management Tips – Recharge Your Personal Powerhouse Today Using 3 Proven “Mojo” Strategies

Article by Paula Eder

Time management tips, at their best, revitalize your personal power – not later, but right now. Executive coach Marshall Goldsmith fully grasps this. In his most recent bestseller, “Mojo: How to Get It, How to Keep It, How to Get It Back if You Lose It!” he describes this special quality as “Mojo”:

“Mojo is the moment when we do something that’s purposeful, powerful, and positive and the rest of the world recognizes it.”

If you want to build satisfaction and social capital, what time choices do you change? Goldsmith’s steps are remarkably straightforward. Furthermore, he offers a wealth of inspiring success stories to back up his theories. Here are 3 essential stratagies he recommends to prioritize the power of positive thinking as you plan your day:1. Thoroughly commit to your happiness.

Each day, rate each time choice you make on a 1 to 10 scale… Simply ask yourself the following 2 questions:What level of meaning or long-term benefit did you derive from this activity? What degree of short-term satisfaction or happiness did you experience? Notice how assigning a number to each activity helps you establish a hierarchy of priorities. In day to day life, it can be difficult to weigh options on short notice. Activities vary so greatly! Using numbers as the common denominator makes it easier to be decisive.

2. Persist as if the quality of your life fully depends upon it.

To achieve positive lasting change, ongoing follow-up is essential. Don’t be content with simple insights. Take the answers from the previous two questions and use them to reconstruct your time choices accordingly. Make this a daily commitment! Then you will experience first-hand how exercising power over your time choices directly increases your personal power.

3. Focus on explicitly positive communication.

Never assume that others can read your heart and your mind. Express your good intentions clearly and unambiguously so that they can’t possibly be misunderstood. Observe how sharing your appreciation and good will creates bridges between you and others! Verbalizing your satisfaction, gratitude and good wishes puts you “on record”, and this willingness to commit yourself helps strengthen relationships.

You can energize yourself and brighten your workplace dramatically by simply working these 3 tips. They require dedication, assertiveness, honesty and consistency. But your efforts will be rewarded when you experience that powerful upsurge in confidence and effectiveness. What better reward could you seek?

Now, how will you build on these ideas to make your life better today?

Time Management Tips – Create Flexibility Using 5 Proven Steps To Meet Your Biggest Challenges With Time

Article by Paula Eder

Time management tips are lifesavers in stressful times. They are like paddles that move your kayak safely through the rapids. Each day will surprise you. Each challenge calls on you to respond with strength and flexibility.

But how much have you been taught about developing flexibility? Could mastery of this skill have helped you through past crises? Well, you can enhance your flexibility now.

The more you develop a core understanding of how to flex, the more motivated you will find yourself to exercise this strength, day after day.

Let’s return to the metaphor of the kayak. Envision yourself expertly guiding a kayak around eddies and rocks on a cool spring morning. Sense the exhilaration as you successfully navigate each obstacle. Maintaining this sense of centeredness, feel yourself develop agility in this moment to bring to today’s challenges. Here are some underlying principles of flexibility:

5 Flexibility Fundamentals:

1. Agility Improves Balance

The more agile you are, the more you can keep your balance. Which way is the boat pitching? Can you be at one with the motion and feel the dance? At times like this, you may feel more attuned and more alive.

2. Befriend change by anticipating it.

Since everything changes, your plans must change, too. Life surprises us all, as these times prove beyond a doubt! Old expectations are torn loose from their moorings, and we must swerve around them to avoid collision. You must know what is essential to hang onto and what can be eliminated. Difficult as these times are, they invite us to develop our core strengths. To keep afloat in troubled waters, identify what can be thrown overboard. Each good decision strengthens your self-reference and resilience.

3. Cultivate Relaxed, “Open Focus”.

Focused alertness guides you best. Immerse yourself in the moment. Sense where you are, and what appears just ahead. Resolve to engage fully, and see how you can replace fear with curiosity.

4. Viable Priorities Keep You Agile.

Clear priorities are the backbone of flexibility. Your priorities tell you who you are. They guide all your choices. Although it’s human nature to want to have it all, you define your strengths when: You identify just how little you need. You declare what comes first. You maintain what’s foremost in your life.

5. Gracefully Letting Go Supports Optimal Balance.

In Scott Peck’s classic book, The Road Less Traveled, he identified balancing as one of the 4 essential disciplines to living well. “Balancing is discipline, disciplined,” he states. That is, without the flexibility to give up one benefit to preserve another more valued one, we become rigid, encumbered, and eventually topple over.

All schedules, plans and time management strategies need to be tempered with flexibility. Become such a good friend to yourself that you can immediately identify what’s most important to you, and what you can let go. Support yourself in this all-important endeavor. It will strengthen your humanity, your grace under pressure, and your sheer pleasure in life.

As a final exercise, ask, How can you start clarifying your priorities today to cultivate flexibility and find more time?

Time Management Tips – How to Transition Through Crises Using 5 Resilient Strengths

Article by Paula Eder

Time management tips do more than enhance performance. They teach you how to survive potentially devastating crises. Challenges can arise anytime, so develop your crisis management and time management strengths accordingly!

Strength Training for Times of Crises – 5 Crisis Tips:

Crisis Tip #1: Cultivate gratitude as a grounding strength.

The more you appreciate everything you have as a temporary gift, the more realistic your expectations become. You accept deep down that life is change, and develop a lower center of gravity. You build resilience and latitude, responding nimbly when challenged. What’s more, gratitude helps you respond from a perspective of creative abundance, rather than rigid scarcity. That translates into lowered stress, and problem solving that is both creative and cooperative.

To strengthen your gratitude attitude, try this daily exercise: every morning or evening, write down 3 things you are grateful for. Call these to mind as you drop off to sleep, and when you rise in the morning. See how this energy shift reaches into your subconscious, enhancing your perspective and flexibility when problems arise.

Crisis Tip #2: Activate your awareness.

Accepting life’s uncertainty enhances alertness, because you realize that you cannot rely on default responses to emerging situations. The sooner you spot a change on the horizon, the more time you gain to strategize.

Exercise: Practice picking up subtle cues from your surroundings. What do they tell you about what is on the way? It is particularly helpful to identify new patterns of change as they surface. Some signal important new developments. Others may highlight strengths and weaknesses in how you and others first react to unexpected challenges. You can develop and direct your strengths to meet these “moving targets” of upcoming transitions.

Crisis Tip #3: Learn how to fall.

Everybody – absolutely everybody falls sometimes. Not everybody gets back up. Practice helps! Learn how to hit the ground while protecting yourself in the process. Identify your flexible strengths. Compassion? Resourcefulness? Humor? Faith? Grit? How do they provide a cushion for you? Think of examples, and how you can build on your strengths as well as develop new ones.

Exercise: Quickly list what time choices can best help you absorb the impact if you are confronted with a crisis, and what activities and commitments must be safeguarded at all cost. Rehearse and visualize your optimal responses, committing them to memory.

Crisis Tip #4: Relax on cue.

Relaxing is not easy in a crisis. But then, all the more reason to practice! Bracing yourself compounds the impact of any shock. Learning that you can relax, on the other hand, provides you with the inner peacefulness that comes with self-reference. Don’t let stress undermine your capacity to respond with intelligence. Learn how to calm yourself, and develop as many techniques as possible. As you tune into your stress level, you will be pleased and gratified to see how helpful these strategies prove to be.

Exercise: Notice where you tense up throughout the day. Practice relaxing through breathing, centering your thoughts, and giving yourself affirmations, to remain alert. The more automatic you make this, the more naturally you can access this skill when you need it most.

Crisis Tip #5: Decide where to fall.

Sometimes, a fall is inevitable. If you automatically hang on until the very last minute, you forfeit the chance to land on the softest ground. Visualize letting go.

Exercise: Again, cultivate foresight. Apply the lessons you learn from the previous exercises to create contingency plans for different scenarios. What are you ready to give up or trade in for more peace of mind?

These are not exercises in pessimism. On the contrary, they are invitations to cultivate strengths that enhance your quality of life every day, even when all goes according to plan! By living more consciously and deeply, you live more in the moment. And that is the best time management possible.

So, how can you use your time to live your best life?
